YorPower celebrates 30 years in Power Generation!
2019 marks our 30th Anniversary in the power generation sector and allows us a time to reflect on the many feats and milestones surpassed over the past three decades.
From humble beginnings in 1989 starting out as a small, local business, employing a handful of engineers based in York, YorPower has become an internationally established company, with a truly global reach. Based just outside of Leeds in a purpose-built factory and still a fully independent British business, YorPower stands out as one of the most recognised and successful manufacturers and suppliers of Diesel Generators on both a national and international scale.
In its’ early days, YorPower was a small but successful business which grew each year, buying and selling used generators. A small engineering team refurbished gensets and rebuilt engines as well as control systems. These used gensets were then sold to the UK business sector as well as a developing overseas market.
Milestone
YorPower’s first milestone was achieved in the 1990s. With an ever-growing demand for gensets during this decade, an innovative new approach to meet such demand was paramount. In order to meet the market demand for more sophisticated automated emergency power and a more effective response to power failure, the YorPower management team partnered with FG Wilson to provide the right package for its clients. As a leading FG Wilson dealer in the UK, YorPower was allowed to trade internationally and soon became one of FG Wilsons key customers in both generators and parts. Rapid and continuous progression in the sector showed no sign of coming to an end, such was, and still is, the ever-increasing demand for backup power. YorPower’s ambition and desire to satisfy this demand led to them becoming a fully independent dealer in 2006, offering not only FG Wilson product, but also Caterpillar and Cummins. A new board of directors was established in 2009 and their experience in developing new markets in the sector paid dividends. Demand continued both overseas and at home and to cope with the capacity in the market, in 2010 YorPower decided to improve its offering even further by manufacturing generators in house. The decision to invest capital into a production facility was significant and it proved a real step change for the company, allowing it to increase volume for its export customers and build bespoke gensets for large projects in the UK. Custom designed acoustic testing and pre-delivery inspections ensure that all new generators leave the factory ready for the application the customer has specified.
Distribution Panels & Electrical Switchgear
In 2015, YorPower acquired an established and dedicated switchgear business which specialises in designing, manufacturing and supplying ATS panels, controls, distribution boards and synchronising switchgear. This acquisition has allowed YorPower to not only supply cost effective standard product, but also to significantly reduce the cost of bespoke distribution panels.
Spare Parts and Components
Throughout its 30 year history, YorPower has always strived to ensure that its products can be supported throughout their life cycle. Aftercare and maintenance are therefore paramount in ensuring that YorPower generators perform and operate as designed. With this in mind, YorPower is justifiably proud of its aftermarket team which is staffed by experts. With many years’ experience in specifying and supplying genuine OEM parts globally, YorPower can despatch worldwide within 24 hours of order. With extensive stocks in its warehouse, YorPower provides the full range of genuine components for all leading manufacturers, including Perkins, Cummins, FG Wilson and Caterpillar.
2019 and The Future
With the expansion of the engineering team and the company’s supply chain partners, YorPower has much to look forward to in 2019 and beyond. The company continues to perform very well in the UK market, but its manufacturing capacity means that the company now supplies to customers in over 60 different countries.
Markets include hospitals, commercial businesses, data centres, utilities, telecoms, public services, prime power applications, food industry, agriculture, leisure, construction and production businesses. There is much to celebrate during YorPower’s 30th year, in terms of projects and goals that have been achieved. Moving forward, is always the key focus at the company.
Next on the agenda – The Middle East Electricity Exhibition in Dubai and the data centre world exhibition at the excel centre in London. YorPower will be attending these exhibitions alongside industry leaders and practitioners to share their extensive knowledge of power solutions and how they can be applied to the international power and data centre industries.
